This course gives an overview of available free sources for Patent Information on the Internet. Special attention is given to the coverage and limitations of these systems. In this course you learn to decide whether or not professional support is needed for a specific patent search.
Use of classifications in patent searching
Insight is given into the different patent classification systems like CPC, IPC, US-class and Japanese F-terms. Ways to find and use the correct classifications are discussed. After this course you are able to successfully use classifications in combination with keywords for patent searching.
Searching Non-Patent Literature (NPL)

Accessing patent registers for retrieving legal status information is often difficult, mainly due to the different formats and languages. Guidelines are given on how to overcome these issues. After this course you are able to perform the most common Legal Status searches in the national registers.
Freedom to operate searching (FTO)
A detailed explanation is given on the background for performing Freedom To Operate searches and best practices of FTO searching are discussed.
Successful opposition searching
This course is focused on opposition searching and the best practices in opposition searches. Special attention is given to the granting procedure at the EPO.
Advanced patent searching
This course teaches how to build advanced patent search strategies, how to perform these patent searches and how to handle the search output.
